Frankly I never saw anything bad or wrong with having to make a choice between rifle or ML season. To limit ones self to methods and implements that for all intents and purposes hadn't seen the light of day in over a century. For those, back then, it was entirely about HOW a deer was taken. Anyone can spend all the time in the woods they want, season or not and if it's about getting together with family and friends what's to stop anyone from doing that any time? Those arguments, in reality, are rather moot. For those who put forth the time, effort and their money to get archery and ML seasons established it was NEVER about killing another deer or getting to spend more time in the woods. The thought of them or scoped handguns firing rifle cartridges ever being allowed during ML season was beyond comprehension. At the time of the implementation of ML season the modern, scoped in-line rifle was barely in its infancy. They had no idea such a thing as a cam actuated arrow launching device was in the then distant future. Probably no doubt the same as those who worked so hard for a separate archery season. I believe I can say with complete confidence that those now deceased who worked so hard for the season would feel the same way if they could see what it's become. Had I known what it was going to morph into I would have been completely against it and been perfectly happy using one of my muzzleloaders during regular season, same as always. I don't know who first came up with the idea of a separate ML season but it seemed like a good idea at the time. Granted the opportunity to use our muzzleloaders was there anyway and I frequently hunted regular firearms season with a muzzleloader as did many, many others. A modern, scoped inline firing saboted, jacketed pistol bullets hardly qualifies nor does a scoped handgun firing rifle cartridges or some of the firearms allowed during "Alternative Season", such as a short AK. The intent of the season was to "give hunters an opportunity to use and experience the firearms of our forefathers". ![]() I wasn't in a position of influence but did what I could by talking to people and hopefully convincing them it was a good idea. City area at the time and knew nearly all of those who worked so hard to get a muzzleloading season, same as those who worked so hard to get an archery season. Those of us who are old enough remember when "Muzzleloading Season" was implemented by MDC.
